Blind Spot Elimination for Buses
A recent article in BusRide
Magazine explains how a
camera-based vision system can completely eliminate
the blind zones on
transit buses, showing tremendous
potential to reduce transit bus
side-crashes.
Paul Hughes, Director of Sales for the RV and Specialty
Vehicle Markets at Velvac, summarizes the findings of a research study
conducted by the Center for Urban Transportation and Research (CUTR), which
evaluated the effectiveness of mirror-based, sensor-based and camera-based
systems for side-collision avoidance.
They concluded that
camera-based vision systems,
similar to the ones offered by Velvac, can not
only
eliminate blind spots, but also significantly improve visibility in
all inclement weather conditions, allowing
the driver to perceive
distances and distinguish objects correctly.

Velvac Cross View Mirrors Help Drivers Comply with recent New York Law
On
July 18, 2011, in an effort to improve vehicle safety, New York Governor
Cuomo signed a law requiring heavy trucks registered in New York to employ front convex, or "cross view", mirrors when driving through large New York cities.
According to NHTSA, frontal impacts account for
almost three quarters of all pedestrians killed by large trucks. This law
will go a long way in significantly reducing such fatalities.
Velvac first developed front dual-view crossover mirrors more than 25
years ago and has expanded its offering on heavy trucks many times since. As
a result, Velvac has one of the most complete offerings of quality front
crossover mirrors in the industry. When properly installed, these
mirrors will help vehicle owners comply with this recent New York State law.

Velvac announces a new 2020 Shuttle Bus Mirror System.
Velvac, Inc. is pleased to announce the introduction of a new 2020SS mirror system for shuttle bus applications which combines the styling, durability and performance of our door mounted 2020 mirror, with our new, easy to install fender mounted 2020 mirror with a spring loaded pivot system. The mirror systems are available to fit both GM G-Van and Ford E-Van chassis in both 96” and 102” body widths with optional cameras, in-glass turn signal indicators, heated/remote for both flat and convex glass, adjustable home position and foldaway feature.
Velvac’s engineers achieved class-leading visibility and glass stability through a series of innovative design features aimed at improving the rigidity of the mirror system as well as minimizing vibration. The mirror arm and base include a heavy walled die cast construction utilizing OE tested materials and finishes to withstand tough shuttle bus duty cycles and climates. The Velvac deluxe mirror head provides a wider flat glass and larger convex providing a 40% larger field of view compared to typical shuttle bus mirrors used today. The larger field of view and the outstanding stability allows the mirrors to provide a clear image of the blind spots and passing lanes around the vehicle leading to improved safety and faster driver reaction time.
